Biography of Josiah COCKS

Josiah COCKS was born on August 26th 1887 at Greenwich East, London, England.

Josiah is the son of Sampson Cyprus COCKS and Mary Ann AGER.

Josiah used to go to the Creed Place School at Greenwich, London.  In 1901, he has a recommendation (probably) for a job from the School Board of London.  He is only 13 years old.

Josiah appears in the following British Censuses : 1891 and 1901.

Josiah left Liverpool with his parents on June 25th 1908 to Canada.

That was aboard the Dominion Ship.  There was a tragedy on that boat.  His mother died of intestinal occlusion.  Sampson and Josiah arrived at the Port of Quebec on July 4th 1908.

Josiah got married three times in the province of Quebec.

The first time, it was with Ada Mary LEVER of Wallasey on November 23rd 1909 at Thetford Mines, Megantic, Quebec.

They had five children and only one of them survived.  Ada Mary LEVER drowned on August 4th 1915 while bathing.

Then, Josiah got remarried this time with a lady named Violet CARTER on August 26th 1916 at St-Matthew’s Church of Quebec City.  She was 26 years old.  Violet get pregnant a few months later, but at six months of pregnancy, she developed acute appendicitis peritonitis. She gave birth to a baby girl on July 21st 1917.  The baby did not survive.  The mother died on July 24th 1917.  After what he had gone through, it must have been very sad to bury those two beloved.

Josiah was now twice widow with a 5 years old son.

While fulfilling his military service at wartime, he met my grand-mother Lumina LAVOIE near the Citadel of Quebec.

That didn’t take long before he asked her to be his wife.
