COCKS SURNAME ORIGIN
Where does that family
surname come from? At origin, how was it written? Cock? Cox? Cock's or another
spelling? From what country did he come from? England, Scotland, Ireland or
elsewhere?
For the moment, its origin
is unknown for me. But I intend to do some intensive research that could allow
me to discover from what country this family surname came.
In the CBD, Canadian
Biographical Dictionary, there are some people with this last name that make
their roots in the province of Quebec. They arrived here around 1600. I will
inform you later from where they come from when my work is done. I can tell you
that they were not my ancestors, because my great-grand-father arrived in
Quebec only about 1908. That doesn't mean I am not related to them.
As far as I could go back,
around 1860, my g-g-father year of his birth. At the time he left England, he was living at London.
My grand-father John Josiah
COCKS was born in London, England the 26th of August 1887. He was 20 years old
when he came with his parents to Canada in 1908. Unfortunately, his mother,
Mary Ann AGER, died on the boat of peritonitis while crossing the Atlantic
Ocean.
So, they arrived the year
1908, the year that Quebec City celebrated "Quebec Tercentenary
Foundation". My grand-mother always said to her children that her husband
and father-in-law came that year of those big celebrations. How come people
could forget those events?
I will make a research on
that subject and will tell you what I have discovered. I think that my discovery
will be very fascinating.
About my ancestry, I hope
to go back in Middle-Age about the time we could find written documents, before
that time there were only documents for noble people.
I would like to be
optimistic and believe that my ancestors were highly placed people, but I
prefer to be realistic and believe that they were of common birth about
farmers, tradesman, etc.
If you have made any
research on that family surname and could help me with its origin, you could be
very of help sharing your information with me. I am ready to make information
exchange. Don't forget, you have to ask me authorization before you copy any
information I have on my site. I would like very much to know who is interested
to that ancestor line. In the future, we could continue making exchange
information.
A year or two ago, I had
discovered on Internet a website that explain the Cocks's name origin.
Unfortunately, I can not find it any more, it seemed to come from Danemark.
Maybe it does not exist anymore, but if it is still existing and you know about
it, please, advise me.
And the research must go
on, I will come back to you with more information about this very interesting
subject.
I hope that you are very
patient because in that field, it is essential to be patient. No need to rush,
we have to think seriously about what will be the next genealogical track.
Always under construction
