Touch Down

Ste. Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec
My athletic debut
In front of country cottage
Great-grandmother secured
For her daughter
(My grandmother)
Seized by tuberculosis
To mend away from Montreal congestion

Muffin, the family cat, prowls
My father, kneeling,
Steadies yellow Nerf ball
My three-year-old size
"Hut one, hut two, hut three"
Mouth clenched, my leg coughs it up
Yellow ball hurled through a silence
The audience needs no bleachers -
Choking foot-high grasses
The broken bodies of birds
Muffin has touched down.
