In
the spirit of the Thirties, the Fifties brought a wild competition
in the field of the American luxury cars, for a very restricted
market however ! Let us believe that prestige then was more important
the profitability... After Continental Lincoln Mark II and Imperial
Ghia, then sold at astronomical prices, Cadillac decides to go into
great luxury cars.
Thus is born the Eldorado Brougham,
sold for about the double of the most expensive of it's lower and
the triple of the least expensive ! Faithful to it's tradition,
the prestigious make of General Motors innovates with a pneumatic
suspension which will then reveal itself as not reliable ( the majority
of the cars will be converted to good old coil springs), mag wheels
and low profile tires...
But it is in the field of gadgets
that Cadillac exceeds itself:
The Automatics: windows, central
locking, antenna, trunk opening, parking brakes, headlights, memory
of the seats, starter... To it we add the air conditioning, the
speed regulator, polarized rear view mirrors, but also one alluring
collection of "accessories" in the glove box: magnetic silver tumblers,
paper handkerchief and cigarettes distributors, a lip stick kit
with mirror, woman's powder with mirror, comb with mirror and a
bottle of Arpege de Lanvin.
Completely hand made, the Eldorado
was very well made even in it's finest details, the stainless steel
top and counter opening doors dissociates it from it's more modest
sister, just like the engine with two carburetors and 25 horses
and it's low and hurled specific body.
The pill wont be swallowed:
only 707 Eldorado Brougham will be manufactured between 1957-58...
