- The protestant party start in France in the early sixteen
century under the reign of king Francis the first. Under
the reign of Charles the ninth, his mother Catherine of
Medicis was in fact ruling France. Trying to maintain the
royal power, she tried to play on the rivalries between
the catholic party lead by the Duke of Guise and the
protestant party lead by Coligny and Henry of Navarre.
The protestant had became a state in the state and from
1562 to 1584. The protestant represent 15% of the french
population. As for result eight religion wars will took
place. One of the major event will be in 1572, the
St-Barthelemys massacre. At the occasion of the
wedding of Henry of Navarre with Marguerite de Valois
(the sister of the king), the leaders of the protestant
party will be killed. Henry of Navarre will survived and
became the head of the protestant party. At the death of
Henry the third in 1589, the throne is supposed to go to
Henri of Navarre. He will resigned is religion to became
king of France, in 1598, he proclaimed the Edict of
Nantes. That edict give a relative freedom of cult to
protestant. After the death of Henry the fourth, his son
Louis the thirteen under the influence of Cardinal
Richelieu will begin to restrict those liberties. In
1627, the principals strongholds of Protestantism will be
besieged. The town of La Rochelle will fall even if
England have tried to help them.
