Notes:
- François Xavier Garneau is consider to be the first
modern historian of Canada. He published a «History of
Canada» in 1845. Even if he was a practicing Roman
catholic, in his history he show sympathy for the
Huguenots and criticize the Catholic church particularly
Bishop Laval. We have to say that the wife of the first
Garneau who came in New-France, Marie Mazouer, was
protestant.
- He will be hardly criticized by the Catholic
establishment and under the pressure, he will soften his
talk in the second edition. All the subsequent editions
will be expurgate of the passages favorable to the
Huguenots. The only edition that will be conform to the
first one is the 1913 edition publish in France at
“Edition Alcan”.
