Notes:
- Permanent settlement in Acadia and St-Lawrence river
(1602-1627)
- In 1620, the monopoly is given to the brothers Guillaume
and Emery de Caen. Both are Huguenots. Protestants and
Catholics have to live together. Many frictions will take
place between the towo groups. Catholics will complaint
that they have to assist to the Protestant office to be
well regards by the authorities of the colony.
- Another point of discord was the how to conduct the
colonization. The Huguenots want to make permanent
trading posts, Catholics were wanting to establish many
settlers to convert the Indians. It is however difficult
to blame the Protestant to be reluctant to bring settlers
with the interdiction to practice their religion.
- Starting in 1616, the Jesuits and Recollet fathers will
start a denigration campaign against the Huguenots. Many
reports will be sent to the French court. Huguenot
books will be burnt. Libelous pamphlets will be
printed in France. In 1627, the monopoly of de Caen will
be revoke and the Company of the hundred associates will
obtain the monopoly of New-France. The company
charts forbid to Huguenots to come and to settle in
New-France . We must not that coincide with the fall of
La Rochelle in France and the end of the political power
of the Huguenots.
