Notes:
- For a protestant New-France (1555-1565)
- Under the influence of Admiral Coligny, the head of the
protestant party and prime minister of France . The King
will accept the fact that his protestant subjects could
have a settlement where they could live and practice
their religions.
- Villgaignon a former Catholic converted to Protestantism
will be in charge of the new settlement in Brazil in
1555. They settled in Rio de Janeiro. At first, the zeal
of Villegaignon asking ministers from Calvin for his
settlement will be called the new St-Paul. But
Villegaignon will soon come back to Catholicism and
persecute the Protestant settlers. He will himself
drowned three Protestant ministers. They will call him by
now the new Caën He will return to France and the
settlement will be destroyed by the Spanish.
- Two other attempts from 1562 to 1565 will be made by Jean
Ribault and Mr. De Laudonnière. These settlements in
Florida and Carolina will be destroyed again by the
Spanish.
- In 1572, Coligny is killed in the St-Barthelemys
massacre. That will be the end of the idea of a refuge
colony for the Huguenots. As Marcel Trudel, a reputed
French-Canadian Historian said. «France had just miss
the opportunity to soothe his religious problem and to
change the history of Protestantism in America that would
had predominated for a long time.»
