Notes:
- Permanent settlement in Acadia and St-Lawrence river
(1602-1627)
- In 1602, Pierre du Gua de Monts, another Huguenot will
make a settlement at Port-Royal in Acadia. Champlain will
accompany the expedition as a geographer. We know by the
writings of Champlain that there were many Huguenot
settlers and a Protestant minister. Let me quote
Champlain «
many gentlemen & all kind of
craftsmen & soldiers & others, from one religion
or the other, priest or minister
»
- I will now made a digression on Champlain. Even if
Champlain present himself as a Roman Catholic. We may
have some doubt about his religious origin. He was born
in the city of Brouage, a Protestant city. His first name
Samuel was not given to Catholic child. His
uncle and protector was protestant. His wife Hélène
Boullé was a protestant. He will be very tolerant for
his protestant partner.
- We also know by the writngs of Champlain that the
Catholic Priest and the Protestant minister were
continually in conflict. They even physically fought one
against the other. Both died at the same time and the
sailors with a great sense of humour put them in the same
grave to see if dead they will stay in peace.
