Notes:
- Continuous presence of Protestants 1632-1685
- With the arrival of Mgr. Laval in 1659, we will assist to
a growing repression of the clergy against the Huguenots.
The first abjurations will take place. Mgr. Laval will
complaint many time to Rome to have the Huguenots
excluded from the colony. He will ask to Colbert, the
minister of the colony in France to send peoples coming
from Normandy instead of La Rochelle.
- However, the civil authorities are tolerant, Mgr. Laval
will have to wait in 1670 to decide the Superior Council
to vote a regulation to control the activities of the
Huguenots. That regulation forbid them to exercise their
religion. The merchant can stay only for the summer
period and exceptionally can they with a permission for
the winter. They must live as good Catholics and make no
scandal. Some will be prosecute to have work on Sunday.
- Officially the Huguenots can not settled, however, the
authorities will close their eyes. They need badly
craftsmen an the number of people coming to New-France is
so scarce that they dont embarrass with their
religious origin. So many merchant and clerks will
settle, each regiment of soldiers will count a certain
number of Huguenots. We will find amongst the Kings
daughters, even if they are coming from Catholics
institutions.
