Introducing the new and exciting
program “Parenting with Love & Limits”! |
|
|
This dynamic program is
based on research by Dr. Scott Sells from Savannah
Family Institute (SFI) who you may have seen at
conferences held in Montreal over the past few years.
This program was developed based on research identifying
effective strategies for both everyday and extreme
problems teenagers and their families face. This model
is being used extensively in the USA, in Europe,
Australia and closer to home in Ontario. As an integral
part of this program all families are asked to
participate in ongoing evaluation of the model and,
based on these evaluations, is meeting with great
success. |

PARENTING WITH LOVE & LIMITS
TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION
As the Quebec Regional Center (SFI Quebec) for
“Parenting with Love & Limits”, and as the exclusive
representative of Savannah Family Institute in Quebec,
DM Family and School Services is in the unique position
of being able to offer training and certification for
this program. This will enable professionals within
their community to become certified and able to offer
these groups directly to parents and teens.
There are three overarching categories of teens that
this model has to date proven to be effective with:
|
1. Teenagers
with difficult behaviours – those who
exhibit one or more of the following: |
|
Running away |
Chronic lying |
Setting
fires |
|
Extreme
disrespect |
Destruction
of property |
Threats of
violence |
|
Physical
aggression |
Sexual
Promiscuity |
Threats of
suicide |
|
Stealing |
Chronic
truancy |
Suspensions |
|
2. |
Substance abuse |
| |
 |
The underlying rationale for
the SFI Model is that: (1) Substance abuse/dependence must
be treated in the context of the whole family and as part of
other interrelated behaviour problems; and (2) Comprehensive
treatment needs elements of both psycoeducation and therapy.
The parenting class gives the family the tools they need
(contracting, troubleshooting, button pushing, etc.) to
prevent severe behavioural problems from getting worse. |
|
3. |
Young offenders |
| |
 |
Non-violent young offenders
aged 12-17, and their families. |
| |
 |
Non-violent
young offenders aged 12-17 who are either in placement or
placement prevention programs, and their families. |
Based
on the changes in the laws for the Youth Criminal
Justice Act, this program is also very timely in Canada.
While “Parenting with Love & Limits: is ideal for anyone
living with difficult teens, this program was originally
designed specifically to fit the needs of out of control
adolescents with extreme behavior problems. This program
is therefore an exact fit with the key objectives of the
YCJA.
These groups are effective at assisting parents in
finding strategies to address extreme behaviours, and to
manage their difficult teens at home. In addition, these
groups have also been shown to breathe new life into
families who have lost hope over the years. Finally, the
research from the US shows that the program has a very
high retention rate (92 percent). A program that works,
is cost effective, and has long term benefits for the
youth and their families!
