At the end of 1995, I polled the members of the PML
in an effort to gain an understanding of what people who care
about PLAYBOY think of its covers. I asked that readers vote for
five covers for each of the five decades of PLAYBOY's existence,
although I accepted fewer votes if readers didn't feel qualified
to judge the earlier decades. For the sake of those who are new
to the list, a review of the results:
The Fifties:
1. May 55 (carriage)
2. Jun 57 (cuff-links)
3. Jul 58 (cut-away bikini)
4. Dec 53 (Marilyn)
5. Jul 55 (rabbit-head tan line)
The Sixties:
1. May 64 (Donna Michelle PMOY)
2. Jun 61 (dictionary)
3. Nov 64 (girls of Germany)
4. Jul 64 (lipstick rabbit)
5. Dec 62 (double-sided Xmas package)
The Seventies:
1. Feb 78 (playing card valentine)
2. Dec 72 (cola santa)
3. Jul 70 (upside-down swimmer)
4. Jun 70 (Claudia Jennings PMOY)
5. Aug 70 (footprints-in-the-sand rabbit)
The Eighties:
1. Nov 88 (Jessica Rabbit)
2. Jan 88 (deco)
3. May 80 (stewardesses)
4. Oct 81 (tux bow tie and shirt)
4. Jun 82 (Shannon Tweed PMOY)
4. May 88 (eyes and lips)
The Nineties:
1. Nov 92 (red shoes)
2. Jun 93 (Anna-Nicole Smith PMOY)
3. May 94 (Elle...)
(not enough other covers in the nineties mustered
the votes to win)
So those were the results. I think that our group
showed its credentials and good taste in this poll because many
of our winners had also been winners in contests run by professional
organizations. For example, the dictionary cover of Jun 61 had
received just about every publishing award available. In fact,
the overall knowledge of PLAYBOY cover art on the part of our
respondents was indeed impressive.
