Playboy Video dealt its customers an ace-king meld with the release of "Twenty-One Playmates: Volumes I and II." Time is short so I can't offer a long review, buy them yourself and write your own! A modest review is in order however.
Each video is a good one hour and fifteen minutes in length, good value for $20 compared to the usual 55 minute run-time. The sound quality on my copies is excellent. And those lovely voices, some Playmates treat us to a whole paragraph of their thoughts. I already knew Cathy St. George had a great voice but being reaquainted with those silky tones is a delight. And Petra Verkaik's giggle is to-die-for!
On video, Pia Reyes bears a striking resemblance to Rachel Jean Marteen [or the other way around] due to similar colors, facial geometry, hairstyle, and disposition. The segments of Brandi Brandt, Marianne Gravatte, Kim MacArthur, Lonnie Chin and perhaps others, are familiar from my previous video-watching heyday a few years back. And I'm positive I've heard Carmen Berg deliver that joke before. I'm not complaining about the repetition, however.
A number of Playmates exhibit what I'll call the Marteen phenomenon. I'll look at a Playmate's photos and ask myself, "Why don't I like her more, is something missing?" Then I'll see her on video whereupon the missing dynamic element completes the puzzle. Luann Lee, Kymberly Paige, Pia Reyes, and of course Miss Marteen herself, all rocketed upwards in my estimation after a video appearance.
I'll lodge one teensy-weensy complaint. It may not be logistically possible, but it would be nice if each Playmate could have her own unique video theme-song or songs. My [nearly] eidetic memory likes to associate each tune to its model. As it now stands Carmen Berg and Stacy Sanches have the same tune and there are other pairings as well. I will forever associate the rhythym "d ddd ddd dd" with Rachel Jean Marteen. [Do you think I've mentioned Rachel's name enough times in a review where she is only a referant? Once upon a time, people believed that one could invoke the presense of deity by mere mention. Or is it "provoke?" :-) ]
While I'm on the subject of Rachel and provocation, I'll risk the reader's ire with one more paragraph. Rachel Jean Marteen still retains her video crown but Petra "Giggles" Verkaik, Carmen "Smart-Aleck" Berg, Kymberly "Lollipop" Paige and others join Sammy Torres in giving her a run for her money. Interestingly, Petra dooms her chances of assuming the crown by being TOO good. She's having so much fun by herself, what does she need me for? In contrast, the way Rachel's eyes track the camera give me the impression that she's performing just for me.
