Here's a short review of the movie "Silent Prey" starring Carol Shaya, [former] copchick and Playboy cover girl [94/8].

Title: Silent Prey
Written and directed by: Tom Avitabile
Produced by: Emily Holcomb
Starring: Carol Shaya

Available for rent at Blockbuster.

Synopsis: Former copchick Carol Shaya plays, well, a copchick with a nice big pearl-handled nickel-plated Colt .45. The enemy of shady politicians, crooked lawyers, ruthless hold-up men, and general evildoers of all stripes, our heroine shows a penchant for bringing sex "perps" to justice. With a number of sub-plots intertwined, the main storyline has our [Jewish!] heroine doing undercover duty as a Catholic college girl, tracking a serial rapist. Will the good, er, girls win?

Comments: This movie has all the trappings of the standard cop drama complete with departmental politics, a gruff but lovable captain, a kowtowing chief and commissioner, and a charismatic not-always-by-the-book undercover detective. I almost thought I was watching an episode of "Hunter" except that Carol Shaya makes a much better subject for a shower scene than Fred Dryer.

Carol's "When in doubt, display attitude" approach to acting is surprisingly effective, even though one-dimensional. I could stand to watch this girl on screen again. For a former peace officer, Carol's gunhandling was annoyingly poor from a technical viewpoint but excusable here since the modest gunfights were not central to the story.

The writer did take some care in fleshing out the story with subplots involving a love interest, a civil lawsuit humorously concluded, and a bit of schoolgirl hijinks. The main technical flaw in the direction was the tenuous continuity induced by the challenge of trying to tell so much story in a mere ninety minutes.

The climactic plot twist seemed a bit obvious, though I for one am not crying at their little game. It was a valiant attempt.

"Silent Prey" is worth a look, especially for fans of the "Hunter" genre.
