Antonio, from Columbia, now living in North Carolina, travelling solo on his
KTM Adventurer which he had shipped to San Diego, happy to know he was not the only crazy one out there, did a 50 miles detour back to San Francisquito so he could come have a beer
and share lies with us. |
Life can really be hard on the Baja peninsula, riding gear drying in the sun under the Palapa, neighbors don't all travel by bikes. Beyond the sand, the Sea of Cortez, the warmer side of Baja, here at Bahia San Francisquito. |
The old West side Highway, 50 miles (80km) of salt pans, but beware if you are tempted
to go off the beaten path, it is only a thin layer of crust which is waiting
to swallow you, should you be fool enough to try it, I almost did, until we
saw the deep ditches left by 4x4 who had tried it and later talked to a couple
who spent 3 whole days getting themselves out of it, by carrying stones from sometimes
quite far away one at the time, we are a few hundred feet only from the
Pacific most of the times. Probably the smoothest road in all of Baja and I am tempted to say including some
of the paved ones. |
Baja back roads will sometimes bite you when you are not paying them total attention,
ask Pete, nothing duck tape and tie-wraps can't fix however, I am talking about the bike here, as for it's riders the problem started
too far back, a little over 54 years ago for the two of them I am told, at their
birth most probably, and only got worse with the years. To this day, no known cure... Not that they are looking...! |
