Xavier's dream had come true, just like he had always hoped
and on rare occasions, even predicted. Humans and mutants
eventually started coexisting peacefully. Five years after
Charles' passing away, mutant sympathy slogans were still
displayed on store windows. For a while, doctors even tried
to induce the birth of new mutants. Parents would proudly
exhibit the incredible powers yielded by their offspring.
The world knew it was looking at the path to human
perfection, for a little while.
SCENE I
"Humm ? What are you trying to tell me ?"
"All I'm saying is that she should take a look."
"Trevor! Do you even know what the odds are of our child
being ..."
"Don, your wife has the morphic gene and she's pregnant. If
those odds work against you, your child will probably ...
You know, I thought it was cute when that little kid down
the block would turn to stone. I thought it was real nifty
until one day he reverted back with a shattered spine."
The two gentlemen whose desks were facing each other seemed
to be absorbed in their conversation. The topic WAS serious
indeed, however, it really had nothing to do with their
jobs. Before they new it, there he was , trying to figure
out who to scold first.
"Mr. Tavare, is there a problem ?"
Trevor instantly turned to his terminal screen. "Oh, good
morning Mr. Thomas, I was just thinking about our budget for
this year. We have enough to get our own server. I started
working on the 'f45-a' project this morning, and I'm still
downloading the data." He took a look at his watch, it was a
quarter to one.
"Oh yes, I sometimes wonder why management even bothers with
the meetings. Don, could you call up Gigagon and find out
what they charge ?" As both his aids proceeded to their
chores, Everett remembered he had one of his own. He ran to
his office, picked up his phone receiver and dialed. After a
few rings, a familiar voice answered.
"Ah there Everett. Listen, I called Ms. St. Croix and she's
free tonight."
"God bless you Paige!", he covered the receiver while
looking towards the door . "So we'll meet at nine ..."
SCENE II
A gentle summer breeze washed around the glass walls of
Frost Enterprises, turning over leaves, a few papers, and a
young woman's memories of her past. Paige Guthrie stared at
her reflection. She remembered how Emma took over Charles'
dream after his departure. Ms. Frost was always glad to see
her. They would so often sit down and argue about politics,
her new boyfriend, Emma's cooking, and about who had really
been cheating on poker night. Paige even had memories of her
life at Xavier's school. On one of her birthdays, Emma had
entered her mind, and helped her husk into a double of
Penance. Poor li'l Penny ... Two days passed before she
finally found courage to come out of her hiding place. The
years that had brought them so many memories and so much
wisdom were now betraying her friend. Lately, Emma no longer
played cards. She no longer used her powers to look young
and alluring. A few tears were now resting on Paige's
cheeks. Three years had passed since the White Queen sold
her corporation to the government.
Paige wiped her face clean and looked at her watch, it was
fifteen to. She sighed as she spotted a lovely couple in
their late thirties walking towards her. "Howdy there
partners".
"Shush Paige", Everett was wearing a long overcoat and one
of those baseball caps. "Remember, I realize no one is
expecting this kind of stunt to be pulled. We would still do
ourselves allot of good if we remained inconspicuous".
"Incon what ? If you ask me, you've been hanging with Ms.
Croix more than yo doctor would advise", whispered Paige.
Monet stepped towards the front door, "Si vous voulez,
Madamme Guthrie, you may lead the way".
The mutant once called Husk by her peers, elegantly turned
and walked past her. Her life long friends smiled as she
pealed away at her right index, revealing a sophisticated
pick. She inserted it into the keyhole and carefully rotated
her hand, reacting to every click she heard. In two minutes,
the door was open to them.
