SHERBROOKE - Two Vaudreuil-Soulanges female soccer squads captured bronze at this past weekend's Saputo Cup tournament, the ultimate test of amateur soccer supremacy in Quebec.
The Pincourt-Ile Perrot U14s and Hudson/St. Lazare U16s battled hard in their respective divisions over the three-day tournament. On Friday, the Hudson St-Lazare girls downed St-Michel Pompei 4-1, while the Pincourt squad fell to Monteuil, the eventual gold winner, 3-0.
Saturday saw the Hudson/St. Lazare girls lose 4-1 to their eventual division champs, FC Challenger Mirabel, while the Pincourt/Ile Perrot squad defeated Inter St-Hyacinthe 2-1.
In the medal rounds Sunday, Pincourt/Ile Perrot downed the Panellinios 2-1 to capture bronze, while the Hudson/St. Lazare team handily defeated St. Hubert 4-0 to take the region's second bronze.
For the Hudson/St. Lazare girls, it was an incredible experience after winning the league for the third year in a row and winning the gold at the league cup game on Sept 19.
"The first game on Friday was against St Michel de Pompei with nerves taking over they started with a slow start but ended with a great finish," writes coach Sue Richardson. "With the support of an incredible team, Meaghan Angell put in three goals and Stephany Hainz, one."
Saturday the girls played the 2007 Saputo cup champions FC Challenger Mirabel. "The team played to the best of their ability and the outcome was extremely disheartening. Mirabel won 4-1 with 3 of the goals been scored on free kicks," Richardson notes.
"Sunday however was a whole new day and the girls were ready to bring home the bronze The team played a game of a lifetime," their coach writes. "After Hudson/St. Lazare placing 4th in the 2007 Saputo cup they were bound and determined to place this time around...I have never seen the team want it more."
Shayna Aunger scored two goals, Stephany Hainz, one and Meaghan Angell, one, for an emotional win of 4-0, with outstanding saves by keeper Vanessa Menard.
