New team-boss David Richards has dismissed
rumours that BAR are lining up a driver swap.
Since Craig Pollock was ousted, shortly before
Christmas, the focus has inevitably turned to the future of Jacques
Villeneuve at the team. New incumbent Richards however has ruled out
the possibility of the team moving for Renault's Jenson Button with
JV moving the other way.
"I do not foresee any changes
contractually nor have there been any discussions regarding
change," said Richards.
"I am totally confident Jacques and Oliver
Panis will be our drivers at the first race of the season."
Villeneuve’s world championship with Williams
in 1997 used a Renault engine and with the top six driver slots all
taken, Button’s drive could be vulnerable.
"I have a job to do to lead the team and
produce the best car within our ability," he said.
"That is the most significant thing I can
do to influence Jacques."
"It is no different from last year, it's
what happened in January last year," Richards said.
"Jacques tested the car on Wednesday and
was very encouraged and went away from the test in a positive frame
of mind.
"As far as he was concerned we had made
major steps forward.
"The car was basically sound with clearly
a lot of work to do as anyone has to on a new car. We have not got
the proper engine yet.
"We are still working with a development
engine. Honda are working hard in Japan although it will be another
month before we get a proper engine."
In reference to a lack of dialogue between
Richards and JV since the launch, Richards said, "I will be
talking to Jacques but you pick your moments, you don't just rush in
but wait until the dust settles."
