Jacques Villeneuve missed a testing session in Barcelona recently
due to back problems but the BAR driver is now fit and ready for the
Brazilian Grand Prix. Villeneuve has had niggling back pains since
his big crash at the Australian Grand Prix last year; in Barcelona
testing Anthony Davidson took over driving duties so the Canadian
could have time to recover from the most recent bout of pains.
"The back is better," Villeneuve said on arrival in
Brazil this week. "I had a problem at the base of my spine, but
we have made some changes to the seat and it shouldn't be a problem
here. I'm looking forward to getting into the car."
Villeneuve has spoken out against the new FIA ruling to move
drivers back ten places on the grid for the following race if found
to be at fault in an incident: "I don't think F1 needs to be
manufactured like this because it already has a huge amount of
fans," he said. "If you look at other series where they
started manufacturing stuff people got bored after two years.
Everybody starts screaming at each other saying this is fair, this
is not fair."
"It just creates extra problems and it does not improve the
show. Refuelling was there to improve the show and I don't think it
has done so. If anything you just race less because you wait until
the pit stop and all the racing takes place in the pits. Any time
you try and create some fake racing then it just makes it
worse."
He agrees that giving a driver a penalty is not a bad thing but
thinks the punishment itself is a little strange: "Losing 10
places is a little bit strange. If you are going to do something
like that you should go right to the back," he said. "To
punish the driver after is not a bad thing because if you create a
problem on the last lap there is no way you can get punished in that
race. But maybe it should be a drive-through."
