British American Racing boss David Richards says Jacques
Villeneuve may not be the right driver for the team at this time.
Richards tells Motorsport News that BAR may be paying the former
Canadian champion too much, given the performance to date of the
team. He'd like to see more money directed towards development of
the car rather than a driver's salary.
"To be blunt about it I'm going to need the best drivers in
the long term," explains Richards. "It's foolish having
Michael Schumacher driving a Minardi. It's better to get the car
right, and then go and employ Schumacher later."
Villeneuve, who is the second highest paid driver in Formula One
behind Schumacher, has said he would finish out his contract with
BAR this season. He has also indicated that he is not about to take
a pay cut in order to join another team.
"I've got a rough idea where BAR and Honda will be in a
year's time, but how much progress we can make depends how quickly
we can sort things out inside our business," said Richards.
"That will determine everything and that will determine the
decisions for Jacques and myself."
