On the 20th anniversary of his death, JV has been looking back on
his father Gilles Villeneuve who wowed a generation of F1 fans with
his flamboyant, crowd-pleasing style of driving.
Gilles was killed in a qualifying accident for the 1982 Belgian
Grand Prix when Jacques was 11-years-old. JV now admits that he felt
burdened by his famous name earlier in his career. Villeneuve's
early days in the junior formula were something of a disappointment
and it took him four years to win his first single-seater race.
Speaking in an interview in Autosport magazine Villeneuve said:
"It's one thing to get attention when you win, and it's another
to get attention because you're not winning and your Dad is someone.
"It doesn't make you feel comfortable. You're still proud
that your Dad was successful, but I've never been comfortable with
attention in the first place, whatever attention it is."
Villeneuve has also gone on the offensive following criticism
that he is not the driver he once was. He said: "Once I go out
there, I always give what I have. I don't do it for people to notice
it.
"It's just my drive, my internal drive personal drive.
That's the way I am on anything I do. It doesn't matter how close to
the best it is or not, I'll always give everything I have."
