Jaguar's Eddie Irvine believes that Jacques Villeneuve is much more
interested in a competitive car than he is in a large wage packet.
Both drivers have suffered so far this season, Jaguar qualifying
near the back of the grid, BAR not much better and Irvine says no
amount of money can make up for a poor car.
"It will be interesting to see what Jacques Villeneuve does
because it's been suggested he will have to take a 50 per cent cut
in his £10m-a-year wages if he wants to stay at BAR," Irvine
remarked. "Personally, I don't think the cash will top his list
of priorities. He is financially secure but he still craves the one
thing money can't compensate for - a championship-challenging
car."
"He had it at Williams when he won the 1997 world title and,
like us all, he wants to be in the seat of another machine capable
of racing wheel to wheel with Michael. Jacques must have some
regrets about moving to BAR. He is a great little racer who, in the
right car, would have continued thrilling fans."
Despite scoring no points, Villeneuve put on a good display in
the Austrian Grand Prix, carving his way through the field and at
one point running third. After a second pit stop his race finished
on the final lap when his engine blew. Despite the disappointment,
Villeneuve said it had reminded him what it was like to actually
race.
