It is now almost five years since Jacques Villeneuve was challenging
the German at the front of the grid, but there are many in the
paddock who believe that is still the driver Schumacher really fears
- and it seems that BAR's chief mechanic Alistair Gibson is one of
them.
For the past four years Gibson has seen Jacques up close at BAR
and he insists that Jacques still has what it takes to do what he
did in 1997 - beat Schumacher to the championship.
Asked on an ITV-F1.com webchat whether 'Jacques was still one of
the best?', Gibson replied: "Yes I think he is. I think in the
correct car he could be as quick as Schumacher and even quicker. It
would be great to get him in a Ferrari."
Not that Alistair wants to see him in a Ferrari next season! The
South African quickly added: "He's a great asset to the team
and he's a big player. I'd like him to stay and I think he
will."
Gibson also shed some light on what sort of improvements we can
expect in the next two races.
In Monaco the team will have "some new aerodynamic
parts", said Gibson, while "Canada is our big update -
engine cover, new gear box and lots more, hydraulic configuration.
"I think psychologically it will improve, we're pushing
hard. We're making the car easier to work on and more reliable so it
will be better for the mechanics too," he added.
