Team takes
'significant' step towards long-term targets of winning the Formula
One World Championship
Lucky Strike B.A.R Honda unveiled its
eagerly anticipated 2003 Grand Prix contender today (Tuesday) in
Barcelona, Spain. Under the guidance of new Technical Director,
Geoffrey Willis, the all-new B.A.R Honda 005 is significantly
smaller, lighter, has a lower center of gravity and is more
aerodynamically efficient than its 004 predecessor. Over the past
year the team has made a huge effort to dramatically improve
engineering standards and to lift its performance levels and Team
Principal David Richards voiced cautious optimism at today's launch.

"This will be a
challenging year for B.A.R but we have made a substantial step
forward over the winter. Together with our partners Lucky Strike,
Honda and Bridgestone, I am confident that we will make significant
progress towards our long-term target of winning the World
Championship. None of the other teams have been standing still
though, so we will need to stretch ourselves throughout the entire
season to achieve our goal."
The new 005 chassis will be powered by the all-new Honda RA003E V10.
It's a lighter engine that promises to deliver more power plus an
improved torque curve. B.A.R drivers Jacques Villeneuve and Jenson
Button will have exclusive use of this Honda power plant during the
forthcoming 2003 Grand Prix season.
"With a much improved car, Jacques will now be able to
demonstrate his extraordinary talent, while Jenson, with three
seasons under his belt, is well positioned to challenge the front
runners." stated Richards. "Together with our third
driver, Takuma Sato, I feel B.A.R now has a driver line-up that is
the match of any in Formula One."
The new car - easily identifiable by striking 2003 livery featuring
a distinctive olive, red and black engine cover - will make its
track debut tomorrow (15 January) at the Circuit de Catalunya in
Barcelona with Button at the wheel.
