Montréal 2003.10.09 I was deeply saddened to learn this
morning that Jacques would not be racing at Suzuka. After last
Friday's not-unexpected announcement by Craig that Jacques would not
be at BAR for 2004, I found consolation in the thought that I'd at
least see Jacques race in the season finale. Alas, no. Heart on
his sleeve With no words publicly spoken by Jacques since last
Friday, it is impossible to know the effect that such an announcement
had upon him. We all know Jacques wears his heart on his sleeve, so
his sentiments would have been quickly apparent. Never one to do
things by halves, Jacques has responded by withdrawing from the
Japanese Grand Prix. Risks
outweigh benefits One can suppose that Jacques' frame of mind
was such that he felt the risk was too great to race. Gifting his
seat to Sato was an obvious solution if Jacques felt that he could
not be 100% committed in the cockpit. After all, at 300+ kph you
want to be 'all there': mind, body and heart. I'd say that
Jacques' heart could use an extra-large band-aid right now. And
the future... I'm remaining optimistic. I don't think we've
seen or heard the last of Jacques in F1. And if he chooses to close
this chapter of his career, all I can add is bring on Le Mans! Salut,
anne-marie P.S. Merci, Jacques.
