From Bernard Julien (Sept. 2009)

" Short of knowing where we are going, we can still know where we come
from."
To
this question, the answer is often and almost always no. Most people to whom
you will ask this question will be unable to answer. If you go further and ask
them where their ancestors lived, what they were doing or where they came from,
answers would be even more evasive. This is not out of ill will. It's even more simple: no one ever taught them these notions that make
a people proud of its ancestors.
And
you, maybe your child asked you a question of this kind, "Say, who was
Grandpa's daddy?" Were you able to answer.... Yes.. And No..... .
Genealogy
is a leisure, first and foremost. Doing one's
genealogy is very simple; all it takes is a pencil, some cards and some time to
do research, and not much travel besides going to a library or an archive
depot.
In
the end, our ancestors weren't different than us. Often, it will take a lot of
insight to track and find them despite civil registry errors, unexplained
disappearances and especially name and surname changes.
In
genealogy we must always be prepared for everything since we must prove what we
say. Thus, a genealogist must prove to be careful and intuitive.
Genealogy...
what is it really?
What
does genealogy do?
Some will say, "It is the search for one's
ancestors."...." It is the science of searching the origin and
relation of different members of a family."
These answers are true, but too general. Furthermore,
they lack precision. Some will add that this can be done through certificates
of baptism, marriage and obituaries. But genealogy is much more than that. In
fact, beyond relations in a direct or collateral line, one must put the flesh
on the genealogical skeleton.
" The
history of each family deserves to be studied and told, no matter what its
social rank, ancientness, origin, tribulations, components are."
