    neat stuff
      • The period after the Roman Empire is that which in European history is known as the Dark Ages.  There is physical evidence that ca. 573 much of the world experienced two years when spring did not come.  This was probably due to a volcanic eruption or an asteroid impact that caused clouds of dust to darken the sky.  Tens of thousands must have died and many more suffered disease and starvation during that time.  Great migrations leading to conflict and war were also a result of the "time of darkness."
"The comet impact caused crop failures and wide-spread
starvation among the sixth century population. The timing
coincides with the Justinian Plague, widely believed to be
the first appearance of the Black Death in Europe. It is
possible that the plague was so rampant and took hold so
quickly because the population was already weakened by
          starvation."
