Codroy
Valley: Background
The Codroy Valley is known for
some of the most fertile land in Newfoundland.
The landscape is a juxtaposition of quiet and
peaceful rural settings, harboring farming
communities, cast amid striking mountain
backdrops.
The Codroy Valley was one of the
first areas to be settled in Western
Newfoundland. During the 1700's, tensions between
France and England continued to escalate on the
mainland as the battle for territory persisted.
This culminated in the massive deportation of
French speaking Acadians, from what is now Nova
Scotia, in 1755. Of this group, some chose to
establish roots in the fertile Codroy Valley.
They were followed in the early 1800's by
settlers of Scottish descent. Unhappy with new
tax structures in the Cape Breton area, they also
emigrated to Western Newfoundland and settled in
the Codroy Valley.
