I have described the motivations behind Moira, in a text blob that describes it's history. It tells all about where and why.

In short, Moira is for use on a currently-undisclosed open source OS code-named Pandora OS for use on PowerPC hardware. More hardware than ever will support Mac OS X. Since I'm not responsible for that particular part, I'm only disclosing information pertaining to Moira--the portion for which I'm responsible for. The other portions will surface very soon, but this doesn't keep Moira from growing until then.

What I'm hoping is that some people around the 'net will get interested in Moira and help me out. I have a pretty good idea of where I'm heading to, but I lack some time and hands to handle everything. I need help in the following areas:

• Core graphic code
  • Basic stuff is in place (8, 16 & 32-bit color), but need more graphic routines like polygon filling
  • Someone to work on CPen--those are used to alter how the system draws, much like a plug-in for the graphic sub-system.
  • The font system needs to be coded. Some (little) is done yet.
• UI widget code
  • Most of it is done.
  • CUIMenu and CUIScroller need work--they're uncomplete and somewhat buggy
  • CUITextEdit is not coded yet
• Documentation
  • I'm working on that right now
• Core tools
  • Some classes could use more usefull code. Eg, CString is very usefull, but finishing it's Find/Replace stuff would be nice. Stream classes could be further enhanced (perhaps more operators in there)
  • CTokenizer will eventually need to be coded (!) for the script system to work
  • CInterp is a C++ -like source code interpreter currently being designed/coded. It needs regular expression coding being done, and requires a working tokeniser. The overall structure behind things it done, though, and would mesh well with Moira's Instanciation By Name and Method Call By Name mecanism.

Although this "Pandora OS" will come forth every once in a while in these pages, keep in mind that Moira coul very well be used on Apple's Darwin project, various breeds of Linux and other OSes. In fact, for development, Moira uses a Mac OS-based application called TheBox as a virtual machine. The Moira code itself is exempt of any Mac OS-related APIs and even of it's existence. Cool huh?

I dont have a revision system setup at this point, so contributions would have to be sent to me for intergration in the following releases. That is, unless someone can provide a live domain for Moira (these pages are hosted on a regular hard-assed ISP). Want to contribute to Moira? Send me e-mail for information.
