CD-Rs & Meet Dan Rease

Recently, I was informed that Dan Rease has graduated from a general, though poorly-schooled, incompetent retailer of bootleg CDs to one capable of credit-card fraud. I have not experienced this myself, but the following account comes to me from someone on the Yes newsgroup. It would seem that Dan has also put this person's phone number at Rease's porn site, so he is now receiving phone calls. Here are a few of the e-mail he received:

>I ordered some Yes CDs and videos from him and he did not deliver.  
>I tried to cancel the order and he threatened me with lawsuits, physical harm, etc.  
>The next day over $500 in fraudulent charges showed up on my credit card 
>(mostly to porno sites and casinos, which he also runs).  My bank removed 
>all the charges, including the original charges for the cds and videos.  
>Now he is threatening to ruin my credit history.  He has also left obscene and 
>threatening phone calls.

You too risk this kind of treatment to your credit card if you deal with Dan Rease or any of his
aliases.  Feel free not to believe me - post requests for information
on him at any of the newsgroups mentioned on this page.

Before I get to the whole story, I thought I might introduce Dan Rease through some of his newsgroup posts, in the event you have not already encountered him or one of his many aliases.

This is his old address, but the owner is the same:

The reason for the appearance of this page is to provide some information about the current state of CD-Rs as they relate to this web site. Until recently it has been possible to include many of the CD-Rs that were in wide distribution. I have resisted including many CD-R titles, because they are being distributed in such small numbers that the likelihood of any users of this Bootography encountering specific titles is small. The number of CD-Rs now available also made it impossible to keep up.

I think it is necessary to make new users aware of the potential problems when purchasing CD-Rs. Lately, on the Slowhand Digest, the AOL message boards, and other music discussion groups, sellers of CD-Rs have increased in number. Some of these CD-R producers provide a substandard product, and abusive customer service. The name that has been brought to my attention most frequently over the past several months, is Dan Rease.

I will admit freely that I am not a supporter of Dan Rease. As of January 2, 1999, Dan has e-mailed and phoned my server (from Florida to Montreal) in an effort to have my account closed and my site removed from the web. Dan is therefore trying to eliminate the bootography, and remove a resource that many have used when deciding on which CDs to purchase.

I do not profit in any way from maintaining this site - in fact, I pay each month for 5 meg of space on Videotron, and formerly on Generation.net and Pubnix.NET. This expense is otherwise completely unnecessary as I have 3 other e-mail addresses relating to my work. I have been approached by companies willing to pay for banners to be placed at my site, but I have always refused. Though this would generate some income to offset the expense of the site, I would prefer to remain completely independent from all Internet retailers. And frankly, I don't like banners when I visit other sites, so I would prefer not to include them at mine.

Undoubtedly Dan Rease will have some supporters. So as not to be unfair, I will present the information I have, and urge you to seek out information from others before ever ordering any product from this individual.

What sparked Dan's insistence that my site be eliminated was my response to a post made in Slowhand Digest #329 by an unnamed person from Mrvideos11@aol.com. My response never arrived at the digest; however, I did copy to Mrvideos11 and this is how Dan read my post. I will include the post below, but before I do I should point out that I have been e-mailed by several people who suspected that Mrvideos11 is Dan Rease. Whether this is correct or not, Mrvideos11 does advertise for Dan in the Slowhand Digest, a digest from which Dan has been unsubscribed due to his abusive practices. Here is my reply as I sent it to the Digest:

appropriate posts, feel free to e-mail me privately for further
information.

If this is not Dan Rease, then I recommend to Mr. Video that you 
stop using Dan's spellchecker - it makes mistakes.

The day after I tried to post this, Mrvideos11 e-mailed me confirming that Dan was his "friend" with all the tapes.

Almost immediately, Dan sent the following e-mail to my server. I then posted this e-mail on the Digest with Dave Hillman's consent. I thought that it would be useful for newer subscribers to be aware of Dan's practices. Please remember as you read this, that Dan's opinion of me is based on the one post to the Slowhand Digest that I included above:

I wonder if Dan understands the terms "slander" and "defamation" when he sends an e-mail to a third party calling me a "degenerate moron", and a "disturbed individual". I hope that to the average person, this e-mail would seem irrational. It is tame compared to e-mail he has sent to others. Here is part of an e-mail he sent to someone else in response to a complaint (punctuation and spelling are his):
"There is no problem with your CDR the 2-3 second gap is the way the software tracks the songs. some software does this other software does not. It does not in anyway impede the sound quality of your disc. Im so sorry there is no "noise" on your disc or anyones disc. you have an exact clone of what I and everyone who is wildly estatic with the 4/19 show has. No one andI mean one except you has a complaint. This is how I am going to deal with this. dont ever fuking email here again you lying cheating scumbag!! I dont play this horsshit and I mean it!! I work veryhard to get everyone the verybest no one has a problem with this disc except you please try and cheat someone else it does not work here - The Management"

Dan later claimed that he was under pressure, but to this day he has not repaired the errors in the CD-Rs that were returned to him, nor has he returned the money. If this were only an isolated incident I would not be wasting this space. The problem is that there is no shortage of such stories relating to Dan Rease. His standard approach to dealing with problems seems to be name calling. "Moron" is one of his favored words when referring to his valued customers.

Some of the problems with his productions are the following:
1) Some of his shows have been sold under incorrect dates and venues. At one time some of us believe that this might have been an honest mistake. It seems unlikely that it is an error now that more people have received the Boise show for others that they have ordered, long after Dan had already been told that he was selling this show under the wrong dates. Known errors at this time are the Phoenix and Toronto shows from 1998. Some of the other shows he has sold have all the between-song talking and some songs removed, making it more difficult to identify the show's venue. 1) They may contain 2-second gaps between tracks (at the track IDs). This is an annoyance when listening to a live recording, especially when Clapton usually merges at least two songs together in the 95-98 shows.
2) Some of the track IDs are placed in the middle of the song, rather than at the beginning of the song. The result is a 2-second gap in the middle of the song.
3) Dan claims to sell excellent-quality shows; however, he frequently sells recordings with very poor sound quality, and some with incomplete songs. This may not be a problem if you are desperate for the recording, but it is something that a potential buyer should be told about in advance. Remember, Dan is not a bootlegger living hidden in another country and mass-producing his product, where one could justifiably say "buyer beware" (one of the reasons for the existence of the Bootography). Dan is personally taking orders and personally misleading his customers.
4) Perhaps his price has been lowered, but the last time I was informed, Dan was selling his CD-Rs at $55 US + postage for a double. This is a profit of approximately $52US per double CD.
5) Most recently (Oct. 99) I have been receiving messages from people who have ordered material from Dan in the past year and have never received stock. In at least one of these cases, the CD the customer awaits is a very common one that Dan must have - so one has to ask the question, why does Dan not deliver the goods and not respond to his e-mail?

These technical problems are insignificant compared to the abuse you will likely suffer if you mention these flaws to him.

Daniel Rease has been unsubscribed several times from the Slowhand Digest. I have been told that he has been removed from several other discussion groups as well. Since Mr. Rease has several e-mail addresses, it is difficult to successfully unsubscribe him from anything. I would hope that serious collectors and traders of Clapton shows would not sell to, or trade with, this guy. The only way to finally rid ourselves of Mr. Rease, would be to cut off his supply and make as many people as possible aware of his substandard product, and abusive business practices.

I appreciate the support I have received from so many over the past few days. I also appreciate the unsolicited e-mail that some of you sent to my server. This is no longer necessary, as my server has told him to refrain from contacting them. After receiving e-mail and phone calls from Mr. Rease, they have formed their opinion about who is "in the wrong" in this matter.

If you feel the urge to support me further, I ask that you contact your friends and make sure that they don't deal with Daniel Rease. When you see Mr. Rease's name appear in a Digest, discussion group, or message board, please warn others about him. If you have received defective CD-Rs from him, don't be intimidated!!! E-mail and/or phone him and insist that he provide you with the product you deserve for the money that you paid.

A couple of December 1999 e-mail

This is an e-mail Dan sent to someone in December 1999, who was complaining that the two videos he had received produced no sound on the three VCRs on which he had tried them. It is amusing that Dan thinks a "regular" VCR will not play Hi-Fi tapes!! An indication of what Dan knows about his own business, or just outright fraud?

Doesn't one have to be in the same business to be a competitor? Also, I have made no attempt to have him "arrested," as he claims.

It would seem that one of Dan's "girls" was not happy with his service either.
