"The 24 Nights Project"

Many shows were recorded for the "24 Nights" project in 1990 and 1991. In
fact, "24 Nights" was originally to have been released in 1990, but Eric was
apparently dissatisfied with the performances and so postponed it for a year.
Interestingly, though, of all the tracks on "24 Night", EIGHT (!) *still* came
from 1990 shows... ;-)

The shows recorded were as follows:

24/01/90  - 4-piece. The entire set was broadcast on US radio. The      
           versions of "Running On Faith", "White Room" and "Sunshine of   
           Your Love" from "24 Nights" came from this show.
1/2/90   - 9-piece. Nothing ever issued.
3/2/90   - Blues Band. This show was broadcast live on BBC Radio 1 and 
           was subsequently remixed and rebroadcast on the same station.
5/2/90   - Blues Band. Some sections of this show have been issued. 
           "Worried Life Blues", "Watch Yourself" and "Have You Ever 
           Loved a Woman" all found their way onto "24 Night", while  
           several other tracks were broadcast on ITV show "Rock  
           Steady". Roberty missed that one - ha!
9/2/90   - Orchestra. "Bell Bottom Blues" and "Hard Times" were issued 
           on "24 Nights", the rest remains unreleased.
10/2/90  - Orchestral. This show was broadcast live on BBC Radio 1 and  
           was subsequently remixed and rebroadcast on the same station.
10/2/91  - 4-piece. Only "Badge" found its way onto "24 Nights". The 
           rest remains unissued.
17/2/91  - 9-piece. The show was broadcast live on BBC Radio 1.
18/2/91  - 9-piece. Loads of this show has been released. "Pretending",
           "Bad Love", "Old Love" and "Wonderful Tonight" ended up on  
           "24 Nights", whilst "No Alibis", "I Shot The Sheriff" and  
           "Cocaine" were all released on various CD singles of
           "Wonderful Tonight". Interestingly, the versions of "Old 
           Love", "Wonderful Tonight" and "Pretending" (2nd solo only) 
           on the "24 Nights" video are different from their album 
           counterparts, but they were *not* taken from the previous
           night's show. They may even have been taken the year before.  
           Whoever knows about this isn't telling... ;-(
25/2/91  - Blues Band. This show broadcast on BBC Radio 1.
28/2/91  - Blues Band. "Hoodoo Man" found its way onto "24 Nights", the 
           rest remains unissued.
8/3/91   - Orchestra. "Edge of Darkness" from "24 Nights" came from this 
           show, the rest remains unissued.

The date on the CD (7/2/91) is unfortunately erroneous.  The quality rating
doesn't show it, but I have been told that the sound on this CD is superior to
"London at Night" and "Class Blues".  I assume it is equal to its rerelease

The source of this CD is different from all the others versions of this show. 
The audience clapping is hardly heard in places where it is prominent in the
other recordings.  For example, it is clear from listening to this version that 
the clapping before the rhythmic clapping, at the beginning of No Alibis was 
added for broadcast.  This version is clean of this kind of edit, and despite 
how good the others are, this one is ** much ** better.  Unfortunately, there 
are a few seconds missing from the piano intro, as well as a skip in Crossroads, 
and "Sunshine" fades out during the drum solo.  Please note also that the incorrect date is listed
on the cover (January 16, 1991). (R.B.)

This CD appears to be a copy of the Mid Valley release; the Mid-Valley jacket is the insert of
this
release.  The sound quality is superb and not from the FM broadcast that was the source of so
many of the other versions of this show.  The quality is better than the Yellow Cat release.  Here
there is no "error" in the orchestral introduction, and many of the orchestral instruments are better
mixed providing a better balance between EC and orchestra.  A truly excellent recording!  (R.B.)

* Stranger Blues is repeated in its entirety at the start of CD3.  The sound quality has been
disputed with ratings going as low as sb1 or sb2.  I have also received a rating as high as sb6
from
someone who collects large numbers of Clapton imports.  This makes me wonder if there might
not be more than one issue of this volume.  The CDs have been recorded at a low volume. I find
that when the volume is augmented sufficiently, there is more hiss than normal for a soundboard

The date on the CD (7/2/91) is unfortunately erroneous.  On the back of the
case it says "This album was previously released as single CD album '7291
R.A.H.' (Off Beat: XXCD - 2)."  Like "7291" this CD is superior in sound to
the other releases of this show except "Love"; unfortunately, it is still less
complete than many of the other versions. (R.B.)
