icoCROIX.gif .GABRIEL ROULEAU (1613-1673)

......The ancestor Gabriel, possibly born in 1613, could be a descendant of Sebastien Rouollo (Rouleau) and of Catherine Sauvage who lived in Tourouvre, a small locality of the province of Perche in Normandy, in the North-West of France. Tourouvre is located at approximately 150 kilometers west of Paris.

......Since so few people could read or write at that time, names were often recorded inconsistently - as they sounded to each priest or magistrate. Later, because of all the wars and invasions in this part of France, many records and official documents were lost or destroyed. Hence, the archival information from that time in France, like many other places, is scantily available and not entirely accurate where it exists.

......We find very little documentation on the comings and goings of ancestor Gabriel. At the census of 1667, he declared to be 54 years old and at his death in 1673 he was given the age of 60.

......Pierre Boucher, a person in charge of the store in the garrison of the Trois-RiviËres, recruited colonists and among them, the list showed Gabriel Rouleau, lately arrived from France in 1649. Gabriel had to battle against the Indians and at the same time had to provide for all kinds of needs for the garrison. It was during this period of skirmishes with the Indians that Gabriel inherited his nickname of " Sanssoucy ", or "without worry". It is probably within this garrison that Gabriel met his future wife Mathurine LeRoux. Anyway, we find Gabriel and Mathurine, on August 16, 1652, in front of the notary Audouart, in Quebec city, to sign a marriage contract. Gabriel, "usually living in Trois-Rivières", promised to marry Mathurine LeRoux, a 16 year old girl, originating from the town of LaRochelle in France. Gabriel was then 40 years old.

......Around 1652 Gabriel Rouleau was granted by Robert Giffard, Lord of Beauport, a land where he hastily built a log house. On August 12, 1653, his first born daughter, Louise, was baptized in Quebec city. A first boy named Jean is also baptized in Quebec city on March 14, 1655.

......The war between rival Indian tribes intensified so much that at the end of August 1656, a fire, presumably caused by hostile Indians, burned down the Rouleau house and two children of the couple perished in the flame.

......Little time after this harsh misfortune, the Rouleau couple decided to establish a new household in Ste-Famille, Ile d' Orleans, on a land conceded by Charles de Lauzon, Lord of Charny-Lirec. Gabriel built a house there and undertook the clearing of the ground. It is in this new residence that was born Jean Rouleau, baptized in Quebec city on November 22, 1656.

......(One does not find any more trace of this Jean after 17 years of age). Gabriel finally received the deed of his land on June 26, 1657.

icoCROIX.gif..LOUIS ROULEAU (1654-1722)

......(Drawn from: Louis Rouleau, his origins, his life, his descent, AFRA, March 1996)

......The ancestor Louis was born in Missé, a small borough of the department of Deux-Sèvres located near Thouars, in France. Missé dates from the Xth century and is part of old province of Poitou which has been split into three departments: Deux-Sèvres, Vendée and the Vienne.

......Louis was baptized in the parish of St-Pierre de Missé on January 23, 1654, according to his baptismal certificate. He was the only son of Michel ROULLEAU and Renee Bougier or Bouquère who were married in the same parish on January 14, 1653. He however lost his mother a few days only after his birth, that is to say on February 3, 1654. It is not known if Michel Rouleau remarried and had other children.

......One finds the trace of Louis on January 23, 1695. The ancestor Louis, a resident of Montreal, signed a marriage contract with Marie Magdeleine Demouchel in front of the notary Claude Maugue. Two days later, by mutual agreement, they canceled the contract.

......On February 26, 1696, Louis signed another marriage contract in front of the same notary, this time with Francoise Geoffrion. The marriage took place on March 5, 1696 in the church Notre-Dame of Montreal.

......On June 28, 1716, by authenticated contract, Louis Rouleau received from the Sulpiciens, lords of the island of Montreal, a concession on Côte St-Michel, carrying the cencive number 1047. With proof to support this, we can however affirm that Louis had the censive 1047 in his possession since at least 1712. On November 16, 1716, by authenticated contract, Louis sells his concession to FranÁois Morel. After some researches, censive 1047 is now known under lot number 425 of the town of St-Léonard. Lot number 425, of a near rectangular form, in full urban environment, is bounded in a discontinuous way by Jarry East, Vérone, Mennereuil streets and Boulevard de L'Assumption.

An commemorative tablet unveiled in St-Léonard, at the time of the annual gathering of Association on August 31, 1996, was installed on the front wall of a public building located at the 5540, Jarry east; exactly within the northern limit of the land of the ancestor Louis.

icoCROIX.gif..PIERRE ROULEAU
(Rullot or Ruelos) (1720-1790)
and JEAN-BAPTISTE ROULEAU
(Rullot or Ruelos) (1722-1794)

Pierre and Jean-Baptiste were born in Bacilly, commune of Normandy in France. Their marriage contracts present them as being the sons of Rene Rouleau and lisabeth Pholin whereas their baptismal certificates present them as the children of Pierre "Ruelos". It is noted however that all the other patronyms are abandoned in favor of "Rouleau" as of the second generation.

One does not know exactly when these two ancestors arrived in New-France but the documents indicate that the two brothers lived in Ste-Anne-de-la-PocatiËre since 1747. The two brothers each had a farm and were neighbors to each other. The farm of Jean-Baptiste remained in the Rouleau family until 1967.

Pierre contracted a first marriage with Marie-Joseph Boucher dit St-Pierre, in Ste-Anne-de-la-Pocatière, January 12, 1748. The ancestor Pierre married three times and his first two wives carried the same first and last names. These two unions produced 12 children of which 11 married to continue the descendance. Among those, 3 were boys who contributed to the survival of the Rouleau patronym. Pierre died on March 8, 1790

icoCROIX.gif..CHARLES ROULEAU

......This Rouleau was a native of Bellème, in Perche. Son of Jean Rouleau and Jeanne Josey, it is probable that he was already in the colony for some years, when he married in Quebec city, January 23, 1662 (it is the date of marriage contract, not of the celebration) Marie Fayette, a Parisian, daughter of Etienne Fayette and Anne de Coche. It is all what we know about this couple which did not have any children.
