About Book Salah and Family fun Pan Logo

ABOUT:
Steelpan Playing with Theory
by Salah A Wilson

The book comprises 400 pages.

GENERAL INTEREST
Steelpan Playing with Theory is designed for interested musicians of any level of musical attainment; and is suitable for individuals or groups.
It is a step by step approach to understanding the rudiments of music, along with a practical hands-on method of learning to play the Steelpan.

ELEMENTARY THROUGH SECONDARY TO PRE-UNIVERSITY LEVELS
The book takes the individual student, with no prior experience of music or the steelpan; from elementary through secondary to pre-university music level.
The book accommodates the person who can already play the steelpan, but who may lack the rudiments of theoretical music, that they may now wish to pursue.
The book is also an asset for the advanced player who may want to get more out of their musical skills by exploring improvisation from a Jazz perspective.

ABOUT THE STEELPANS OR STEELDRUMS
It is important to identify the steelpan instruments correctly by understanding both their theoretical names and to appreciate the range of musical notes covered by each voice of these instruments.
Some of the steelpan instruments names are historical, and have come a little to odds with their musical names and range as the instruments have been improved and developed over the past 50 years.
Steelpan Playing with Theory illustrates and explains the following range of steeldrum instruments:
  • Soprano - Lead Pan
  • Mezzo-Soprano - Double Tenor
  • Alto - Double Second
  • Two-Pan Tenor - Guitar Pan
  • Three-Pan Tenor - Cello Pan
  • Bass - Four-Pan Bass
  • Bass - Six-Pan Bass.
Again, the range and placement of musical notes chosen for the layout on each steelpan has varied historically as different pan-makers invented or introduced their style to each voice of instrument they produced.
Steelpan Playing with Theory supplies a supplementary section in order to cover the different styles of steelpans to be found; and has chosen some of the more popular and common styles used by most groups.

TEACHERS MANUAL & EXAMINATION EXERCISES
School steelpan music session  Steelpan Playing with Theory serves as a teacher's manual with complete examination exercises; from a theoretical as well as a practical standpoint.
Exercises can be found at the end of each chapter. Throughout there are 13 songs, for individual playing, and also presented as arrangements for an entire band.

MUSICAL STYLES
The material of the books repertoire includes some simple adaptations for beginners; and moves on to cover samples of Calypso, Latin, Jazz and Classical music.
Some of the material includes original and adapted works by the author.
