Terry Fox School has reason to be proud of its success in the area of bilingual education. Test results have demonstrated that students graduating from Grade 6 are achieving in English and French at a level commensurate with the Board’s expectations for English-speaking children. Since French is an essential language in the Province of Quebec, as well as a cultural bonus, parents and teachers alike, felt it very important that ‘bilingualism’ be retained as a top priority. The main goal of ‘bilingualism’ is to make the students functionally bilingual. This means a high level of oral proficiency; and a high level of reading and writing skills. In order for children to reach these goals, the Board has established an academic program in which 85% of the curriculum is taught in French and 15% is taught in English, from Kindergarten to grade 2. In grades 3 to 6, this changes to 45% taught in French and 55% taught in English. In addition, there is a selection of French & English books available to students in the school library. Within the Computer Lab and the Kindergartens, there is an ever increasing usage of computer software in all subject areas, including French and Language Arts. Students use the computer to hone their writing skills. Public speaking is another means whereby children are encouraged to express themselves in both languages, thereby increasing their proficiency and their self-confidence. It is felt that other means might be tried to help children attune their eyes and ears to French as well as to English. Some suggestions are :
