Math Awareness
The Goals Bilingualism Computers Math Awareness Problem-Solving

The goal of Mathematics is to develop in children a variety of problem solving strategies and techniques which will transfer to various aspects of their lives.  Children often say, ‘Aw, what do we need Math for anyway?’  Boys and girls need to know Math for day-to-day activities such as buying the right length hockey stick or how many dollars and cents they will need to buy a favorite CD.  As adults, they might need to know such things as the precise amount of a drug it takes to keep a heart beating and save a life.  In other words, they must not only learn the mechanics of Math, they must be aware of how it applies to all areas of their lives both as children and adults.  Parents can play a big role in helping their children understand this concept.  When painting a room or buying a rug, for example, parents have a wonderful opportunity to have their children help estimate the amount of paint needed or the size of rug required concept.

And so, it mighty be said that the goal of Math Awareness is to ascertain what can be done, over and above the regular program, to make children understand the significance of Mathematics in their present and future lives.  A number of suggestions have been made as to how this might be achieved.  Some of them are:

Real World Numbers, e.g. days in a week, cards in a deck, numbers on a clock

Mathematician of the Month : a student chosen at each grade level whose work would be displayed publicly

Math-a-thon : a contest that could be held, for example, every three months

Computer Math Program

Terry Fox Math Olympics

National Math Examinations : e.g. Quebec Association of Math Teachers, Pythagorus

Field Work : the real-life use of money, for example in shopping

Linking the objectives of bilingualism and computer program strands to the Mathematics program Mental Math

Jogging Math, to reinforce Math facts from daily life.

These are some of the ideas which will be examined in our quest not only to teach mathematical facts and solutions but to create in each student a ‘sense of math’, an awareness that mathematics is not merely abstract ideas but, more importantly, a discipline firmly planted in the reality of daily life.
