A Brief History: Terry Fox School had its origins as part of école Monseigneur Deschamps on Valois St. in Pierrefonds. French and English students shared the building until a new French-language school was built in the 1960s on Huntington Street. The English School on Valois then became known as Fathers of Confederation School. In the late 1970's, due to the increase in enrolment at Msgr. Deschamps, it was decided that the two schools, Father of Confederation and Msgr. Deschamps, would exchange buildings. There was much concern on the part of parents but it was found that the new, one-level school on Huntington was eminently suited to the needs of the English-speaking populations. In 1981, the Principal, with the support of the School Committee and the Staff, petitioned the School Board to change the name of the school to Terry Fox School. It was felt that Terry Fox, who had recently died of cancer after heroically attempting to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research, would provide a highly suitable role model for the students of the school. On January 17th, 1982, the school was officially dedicated to the memory of Terry Fox at a fitting ceremony attended by dignitaries from all levels of government, as well as school board and religious leaders. About six months later, the school had the honor of receiving Rolland and Betty Fox, Terry's parents, who toured the building and addressed the students, calling upon us to continue, an any way possible, the work began by their son. Toward this end, the school has traditionally participated in the annual Terry Fox Run in support of cancer research.
