What
is an Educational
Projects? An Educational Project might be called
a blueprint. It is a five-year plan
which summarizes the goals, aspirations and expectations of the various school
communities: the parents, administrator, staff members and, where
feasible, the students themselves. Considerable effort goes into the development of an Educational Project. First of all, the school must make a needs assessment to ascertain what areas of school life are considered most important and what areas the communities would like to see given special attention. This could include academic areas, such as music, computers, bilingualism, etc. As well, it could include non-academic areas, such as enrichment, school activities, field trips and the like. Finally, the Educational Project might include any factor which would help support the attainment of these goals, such as the role of parents, children’s social and personal development and, for example, any incentive program which might encourage children to strive to fulfill their own potential. The four goals identified for this particular Educational Project represent what the school communities perceived as being most important to them at this time. No doubt future projects will show different needs and expectations. This is what makes the school a living and growing organism. The Goals As a result of the survey, conducted in 1995-96, through a questionnaire to parents and staff members, the four goals identified as being the most important to all are :
It should be
noted that, while we deal in this educational project the four most frequently
mentioned items in our survey, there were others that deserve mention too.
They are felt to be issues which are not specific goals in themselves but which
are complementary to each of the four identified goals. These are:
parental involvement, the ways and means a parent can assist the child in
various aspects of school life, both at home and within the school as a
volunteer; remediation and enrichment, the means available to help a child who
need extra help as well as one who needs greater challenge; and Hall of Fame, a
system of rewards acknowledging such things as students' cooperation, respect
for others or achievement at each grade level. In Conclusion In conclusion, the Orientation Committee, School Committee, Principal and staff of Terry Fox School wish to thank all those whose input made this Educational Project a reality. We are proud of our school and justifiably so. With this document as a guide, we feel that we are set on a future course which can only benefit those we serve : our students. It should be noted that our concern is not only for our present students but also for the generations to come. We wish to leave them a strong and lasting legacy, a school which will produce the leaders of the 21st century. We feel that we are headed in the right direction and we count on the support of parents to help us reach our goals.
