James Schidlowsky :  Concert Chronology (Selected)

Listed in reverse chronological order. All performances took place in Montreal, QC unless otherwise stated.

2006.08.15 @ Zoobizarre

Performed first ever public solo set of unaccompanied and unamplified acoustic guitar improvisations for Gavin's birthday. You'd think after some 26 years of playing guitar and my belief that it's the best music I make, a live set would have happened earlier. Sh*t happens. Or doesn't.

2006.08.14 @ Cabaret Playhouse

The Factory Hens poster

Performed on electric guitar with the jam/stoner-rock trio Los Druidos (A.K.A. Druid Style), opening for Wil Murray's The Factory Hens. After about 40 minutes of playing a pretty monolithic stonerrock jam, the owner of the place cut the power on us! Rawk N Roll! Best show no-one saw!

2006.02.21 @ La Sala Rossa

Performed a solo live set (the first one in a long time) during the tentacules.09 event. I did harmonic singing in my acoustic guitar, and later, treated it with electronics (amplified by a boombox).

A lot of fun; I played prepared guitar and radio/tape mangler.

2001.01.21 in the Silo#5.
"OUT-Silo": banged on all sorts of things with 10 other people, including Philippe Lambert, Jon Asencio (jRobot)... .

2000.12.10 on Radio-Canada.

On the show le navire 'night', which featured excerpts of OUT1-5, and some live shenanigans live from Studio 12 hosted by Eric Létourneau, with  Philippe Lambert, Jon Asencio, Magali Babin, Alex MacSween, Alex Moskos, Nathalie Dion, and Esther b. (who also took photos ).

2000.11.26 in Parc Lafontaine.
"OUT7": played in a quartet with Philippe Lambert, Jon Asencio, and Esther b.

Under shelter from the cold icy rain, but not the wind, with failing batteries, we played hammered dulcimer, electronics, noises, samples and voice.

2000.10.28 in the Old Port.
"OUT6": played in a quartet with Philippe Lambert, Jon Asencio, and Nathalie Dion.

Huddled under an overpass in the old port near Silo #5, we tried to take shelter from the wind on this cold, almost-Hallowe'en evening. Lit in part by pumpkins, we did a 40-minute performance with an audience of 2, using battery-powered electronics, voice and toys.

2000.09.30 on Mount-Royal.
"OUT5": played in a septet with Philippe Lambert (monstre), Jon Asencio, Magali Babin, Alex MacSween, Éric Létourneau and Alex Moskos.
OUT5 - group shot
All sorts of battery-powered electronic instruments, samplers, synths, toys, some flutes, a toy drumset, a record player, a hammered dulcimer, etc.  A bunch of musicians making noise in the woods.  The audience consisted of a few confused passers-by who didn't stop to listen very long.

2000.08.20 @ Blizzarts,  w/ Matt Bain & 'Greg' (A.K.A. the Live Wires).
Also: Shadowboxers, Scott 'Bucketboy' Russell, DJ Subside, Kashi Castro and Dave Levine.

10-minute opening set, providing background noisescape and sounds for Matt & 'Greg', who read their One-Sentence Stories.  (dis)Organized by Paula Belina, although the place was miraculously packed despite. I mangled tapes & radio buzz, with a very minimal setup.

2000.08.13 on Mount-Royal.
"OUT4":  played in a trio of Philippe Lambert (monstre), Jon Asencio and myself.

Musicians: 3, Audience: 0.  Hardly really a show, since it was scheduled officially by monstre for 8AM, and no-one showed up to watch us make noise in the woods! monstre did his voice stuff with a few toys, jon had a synth and an old 75-in-1 electronics kit, and i made sounds w/ a contact mic and effects and my voice and a cow.

2000.08.04 @ Casa del Popolo.
a short opening set, then a collaboration with Detention (Sam Shalabi, Alex MacSween), and Thierry Amar, Flüffy, and Michel (Scorbut).

Detention concert flyer    Due to some miscommunication, I had to do a very short opening set, which was a loud, droning affair on a minimal setup. Then the amazing Detention played. Then Thierry [godspeed..., molasses] joined them. Finally, everyone was on a cramped stage, and we played for almost an hour; it was a lot of fun. I mangled tapes and used radio, creating short bursts of noise, or droning things. Sam did electronics, Michel played prepared guitar, Flüffy [molasses] drums & junk percussion (including a ventilation duct), Thierry on contrabasse, and Alex on drums & nose flute. A really nice evening at the cozy Casa del Popolo organized by alien8recordings.

2000.04.28 @ Artishow.
w/ Âmes Sanglantes & PO (Alexandre St-Onge/Sam Shalabi/Rainer Wiens/John Heward)

j.s. live @ artishow, 2000.04.28, photo by H. Thompson   "kneel right down what was it anyway / guitar on the ground what was it anyway"   -- Kim Gordon 'nevermind (what was it anyway)'

It was an eclectic evening, an interesting bill to be sure.  This time I had a radio drone going, purposely generating a burst of static every so often. Also, a guitar played mallet-style, processed thru various effects.  Near the end, I just used a sort of oscillation generated by the effects themselves, modifying various parameters via a parametric EQ.   Po was really great... a real pleasure to see Alexandre on his contrabasse again.

2000.04.05 @ Artishow.
opening for Aube & a duo of Alexandre St-Onge & Sam Shalabi.

Aube concert flyer 2000.04.05    My first solo show. My main sound source was the whirring of a music box and a tape recorder capstan (both of which I found in the garbage). The sound was processed thru various effects.  For the finale, I reconnected the chime of the music box, revealing the source.  Aube did a more ambient set with 2 panes of glass; it was riveting to see. At the last minute, David Kristian could not make it. The evening was organized by alien8recordings.

1999.11.21 @ Artishow, w/ Matt Bain, as the Live Wires.
w/ Paula Belina, Larissa, Tara Martin & other poets & songsters.

Quite a disaster. I had just driven back from a NYC weekender w/ friends, dead tired, ran to the gig where Philippe had set up my stuff.  I used my most complex setup ever, which had worked quite well at home: 2 radios, a mic & a contact mic, and effects.  The mic fed back uncontrollably, the radios produced uninteresting static. Curiously, some people had enjoyed it.

1999.10.13 @ Chapters Bookstore, w/ Matt Bain, as the Live Wires.

Dear Paula got Matt on the bill of an in-store series of young poets, and Matt brought me along to provide noisescapes.  Not knowing what kind of sound system was involved, I brought a minimal setup: boombox to act as speakers, some tapes, a contact mic and 2 effects pedals. Although Matt thought it wasn't going well, he cut it short, but I felt it was our best performance (or at least, there were a minimum of screw-ups). It was certainly interesting to see the audience's reaction, wondering what a distortion pedal was doing at a poetry reading!

1999.08.04 @ Jailhouse Rock Café, w/ Matt Bain, as the Live Wires.
another poetry evening organized by Paula Belina and Larissa.

Live Wires @ Jailhouse, 1999.08.04, photo by A. Tolnai.    Matt this time had his computer, playing various samples. We had actually rehearsed this time, and worked out a vague piece. I used tapes, radio and guitar, played mallet-style. We had a section in which Matt read some of his one-sentence stories and I provided a noisescape. Unfortunately, the sound guy messed up Matt's computer volume, so I had to turn my stuff down, and it didn't work well.

1999.05.12 @ Jailhouse Rock Café, w/ Matt Bain, as the Live Wires.
as part of a poetry chapbook launch organized by Paula Belina, w/ Strawberry & the Null Set & others

My first public performance. Matt did his one-sentence stories spoken-word thing, and I provided some background noisescapes & sounds between them, using tapes, guitar and effects.
