an artivistic mandate | a central theme | the form is the message type of thing | wanted
Artivistic promotes and defends the values of multidisciplinary,
progressive, and alternative learning experiences, and the importance of connecting or
re-connecting what we learn with what we think, say, do, and feel, to link the
emotional to the rational.
Artivisitic promotes art, music, reflection, and dialogue, as instruments of social change
Artivistic is meant to be a multi-shaped forum which welcomes the stirring of discussion and
debate, always within the borders of respect for all individuals and groups.
Artivistic respects and celebrates all forms of art expression, as well as innovation in approaches
and contents respectful of the environment, within and outside the realms of art.
Artivistic celebrates and promotes young and long-standing artists of all kinds working in one way or
another for social change (environmental issues, social justice issues, etc.).
Artivistic aims to foster collaboration in as many forms as possible; between students of different departments
and faculties (in their active contribution and/or attendance to the event), among different individuals (academics, professionals,
activists, artists, etc.), as well as collaboration with all universities in Montreal and with the wider community of Montreal.
Artivistic, although seeking the financial support of several McGill associations, remains the property of the students, and supports grassroots approaches as well as promotes encouraging the creation and
proliferation of so-called amateur works.
Artivistic strongly supports diversity - of backgrounds, of ideas, of origins, of languages.
Artivistic aims to create an inclusive and relaxed environment, and encourages playing with definitions.
Artivistic is meant to be an accessible and free event, and is open to the general public.
The core theme of the event is the interplay between art, information and activism. The
focus can be seen as being broad and specific at once: broad because the three elements taken
individually can represent a large set of things, specific because we are exploring the point
where they intersect. Seeing how they interact with each other, how they work together or
against each other, or how they can represent one single thing. In others words… Can we question
the relationship between information and authority, that is, the concept of "image as reality"?
Art and information together are antagonistic or synergistic? What is the relationship between
fiction and reality? Does art cloud the pathways or reveal them? Does, or can, art be at once
information and activism?
On top of screenings of both known and not so well known films, professional and amateur filmmakers are
invited to lead a round table discussion about their work, and other topics if they so desire. Performers,
collectives, and artists who have their work exhibited are also invited to take the role of lecturers and
discussion moderators. Professors and/or students and/or activists who wish to speak out on a topic of
their choice are also encouraged to propose their contribution. Basically, there will be an effort at unifying the
different components of the event to further enrich the learning experience.
The different categories of the event include: (there are not mutually exclusive)
films: professional, student, amateur, animation, video, experimental, shorts, documentary, fiction, etc.
art: visual art, literary art, digital art, performance art, etc.
music: all musical styles, individuals, groups, collectives
speakers / round table discussion moderators: activists, professors, students, professionals, etc.
volunteers: open and enthusiastic
